Lenovo IdeaPad YOGA Is An Ultrabook With A Tablet Twist, Or Bend, Or Something

Are Ultrabooks tablet killers? We pose that very question on the cover of this month’s print issue. The debate rages on, but Lenovo is looking to skirt the issue with a newly unveiled offering. Rather than going the Eee Pad Transformer/Slider route and sticking a keyboard on a tablet, Lenovo instead got all bendy and twisty with the IdeaPad YOGA, a touchscreen Ultrabook with a 360 degree hinge on its lid. That little design tweak lets you use the YOGA as a tablet or a notebook. Heck, you can even give it a V-shape, stand it on its end and treat it like an all-in-one.
Buoying its tablet-like claims is its miniscule size; the YOGA clocks in at just 3.1 lbs. and 0.67-inches thick. Spec-wise, the YOGA rocks 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, an Intel Core Processor and a 13.1-inch, 1600x900 capacitive touchscreen that can handle up to 10 points of contact. Why the touchscreen? The IdeaPad YOGA runs Windows 8, you see – which means we probably won’t be seeing it for a while.
It's a nifty idea (and before you get any nifty ideas, you should know that Lenovo patented the dual-hinge design). Would multi-use notebooks like this make you more inclined to embrace Windows 8 with open ARMs

Windows 8 To ARM Tablets: No Disabling Secure Boot For You!

Way back in September, a tech geek brouhaha flared up when Linux fans pointed out that if Microsoft required Windows 8 to ship with UEFI Secure Boot enabled, that could mean Linux distros might not be able to run on the hardware. Don’t worry, Microsoft said at the time; OEMs had the option to include an option that disabled Secure Boot. Things calmed down after that, but now, the debate has resurfaced: new guidelines require x86-based Windows 8 systems to include the ability to disable Secure Boot, but ARM-based systems specifically CANNOT be able to turn Secure Boot off.
Remember that back in September, Microsoft said that it “Does not mandate or control the settings on PC firmware that control or enable secured boot from any operating system other than Windows.” Apparently, Microsoft falls into the “Tablets aren’t PCs” camp, because Computerworld UK’s Glyn Moody found the following tidbit buried deep in the latest Windows 8 hardware requirements:
MANDATORY: Enable/Disable Secure Boot. On non-ARM systems, it is required to implement the ability to disable Secure Boot via firmware setup. A physically present user must be allowed to disable Secure Boot via firmware setup without possession of Pkpriv. Programmatic disabling of Secure Boot either during Boot Services or after exiting EFI Boot Services MUST NOT be possible. Disabling Secure MUST NOT be possible on ARM systems.
It's great that the ability to disable Secure Boot is being required for PCs, but if you want to dual-boot Android and Windows 8 on a tablet, it looks like you’ll want to skip an ARM-powered device. Now, to be fair, a lot of tablets have locked bootloaders and won’t let users play around with the OS. Is Microsoft wrong to lock down ARM tablets? Why do you think they’ve targeted ARM tablets specifically

Microsoft Reveals Next Generation File System in Windows 8 (for Servers)

Much of the focus on Windows 8 has been centered on the Metro UI and whether or not it will translate well to non-touch devices, like your typical desktop PC or notebook computer. Dig a little underneath the hood, however, and you'll find a nifty nugget in the form of a next generation file system. It's called ReFS (Resilient File System), a newly engineered file system built on the foundations of NTFS.
It's going to be introduced only as part of Windows Server 8, which is a bit of a bummer for home users, but it's also the same approach Microsoft has taken each time it's introduced a new file system, the company said in a blog post.
Designed from the ground up, ReFS maintains a high level of compatibility with a subset of NTFS features. In case it's not obvious by the name, ReFS is intended to be more resilient and features meta data integrity with checksums; support for large volume, file, and directory sizes; data striping for performance; disk scrubbing for protection against latent disk errors; and a whole bunch of other things outlined in great detail here.

Wintel Tablet Prices to Start at $600

While more of a steady smolder than a spectacular blaze when compared to the iPad, the Kindle Fire has shown that consumers are not averse to buying a non-iPad tablet as long as the price is right and the specs not too shabby. Amazon has literally lit up the tablet market, with a number of vendors now taking its lead in releasing affordable Android tablets. All the combustion metaphors aside, this surge in the ranks of decent budget tablets is only going to make the task that much harder for Wintel tablets, especially given Microsoft and Intel’s reluctance to subsidize their products. Everyone wants to know just how the duo would respond. Will the two giants try and enter into a price war with their rivals?
The answer, according to Digitimes’ sources at notebook vendors, is a loud no. While not quite as much as China’s ridiculously overpriced RedPad, these anonymous sources expect tablets based on Intel processors and Windows 8  to cost anywhere between US$599-899. But they believe that the decision to offer discounted prices to tablet vendors won’t be an easy one, should the Wintel duo want to. This is due to the fact that cheap Wintel tablets could “seriously damage pricing in the PC market and bring down their gross margin performance.”
The paper’s sources find Intel’s situation to be a bit more unenviable than Microsoft’s, as a failure to offer affordable pricing on chips to Windows 8 tablet vendors could result in them opting for cheaper alternatives like AMD’s x86 APUs and ARM-based SoCs

Did Nokia Just Hint at a Windows Tablet?

Nokia may have just announced a massive quarterly loss due to a precipitous decline in handset sales, but it remains confident of “establishing a beachhead in this war of ecosystems.” The Finnish company is now banking on its Windows Phone lineup to turn things around. But are its plans only limited to the smartphone market, or is it also considering venturing into the increasingly crowded media tablet market?
Late last year, the head of Nokia France, Paul Amsellem, supposedly confirmed the existence of a Nokia-branded Windows 8 tablet in an interview with French paper  Les Échos, only for the company to quickly deny the report. But if Nokia CEO Stephen Elop’s comments during the  company’s recent earnings call are anything to go by, Paul Amsellem’s may not have been quoted out of context, after all.
“The broader digital experience is coming into focus,” Elop said with in response to a question about Windows Phone’s competitiveness against iOS and Android devices. “If you look at the overall Microsoft strategy, you see the consistency of user experience… across PCs, tablets and phones. And for the operators, I suspect they see an opportunity to participate in a larger play when a consumer walks through their doors.”
If anything, this is only a hint. But with most smartphone vendors dabbling in tablets these days, Nokia might find it difficult to simply observe their tussle from the sidelines. What’s more, the company has once previously succumbed to the urge of joining in the fun. It launched a netbook called the Booklet 3G back when such mini laptops were still a rage.
Further, it also has some experience with tablets, having sold a number of so-called Internet tablets before the advent of the iPad. To be fair, though, that experience hardly counts now, as back then it was possible to market anything with a display size in excess of 4-inches as a tablet

Your Next Laptop Might Have a Kinect Inside

The thinking heads at Redmond envision laptop users shaking their rumps and gyrating in front of their notebooks in the not-too-distant future. Imagine being able to raise your hand and manipulate tiles in Windows 8 or moving around documents (insert inevitable comparison to Minority Report). That's the path we're on as Microsoft flirts with the idea of integrating Kinect motion sensors into laptops.
Actually, it's more than just an idea. According to The Daily, prototypes already exist. TD actually got to play with one recently.
"The devices, which at first glance appear to be Asus netbooks running Windows 8, feature an array of small sensors stretching over the top of the screen where the webcam would normally be," TD explains. "At the bottom of the display is a set of what appear to be LEDs."
TD says a source at Microsoft confirmed that the devices it played with are official prototypes. The question is, what practical use is a Kinect-enabled laptop? That will be up to developers to decide. Gaming is an obvious application of motion control, but might be of limited appeal on a laptop or netbook. According to TD, Microsoft probably isn't going to develop its own laptops and will instead license the technology to hardware manufacturers, so they will be the ones who ultimately decide what to do with the technology.

Windows 8 on ARM to Reach Developers in February

With the Windows 8 Developer Preview having been available for more than four months now, all eyes are on the beta or, as it could end up being called this time, the “consumer preview”. Even though no specific release date has been announced, the beta/consumer preview is scheduled to arrive sometime during February. But what about Windows 8 on ARM? Well, there finally seems to be some good news on that front as well. Hit the jump for more.
According to CNET, its sources have revealed that Windows 8 on ARM is now stable enough to be rolled out in developer preview form. One of its sources, who claims to have gone hands-on with an ARM-powered Windows 8 device from a top-tier PC maker, is said to have been very impressed with the whole experience. This source expects to see a developer preview sometime in February
In fact, another source also confirmed this time frame: "We haven't heard this directly from Microsoft, but we've heard this from the hardware partners that [Microsoft] is working with. We've been promised something in the February time frame.”
While ARM-based Windows 8 devices will undoubtedly be hampered by their lack of support for legacy apps, one of the sources sees ARM-powered ultra-thin laptops with Windows 8 posing serious competition to their ultra book counterparts. This is due to the fact that the former are expected to undercut Intel-based ultra books by hundreds of dollars
