How to fix Local Area Connection problem

The first step to resolve the issue is to try troubleshooting to check what Windows reports.
  • Click Start go to control Panel, and open Network Connections or Network and Sharing Center
  • Find and Right click on the active Local Area Connection and choose Properties
  • Check the Connection Status field and see what it shows and follow the steps accordingly.
internet status
If status is ‘Not connected’‘, then follow the steps given below.
  1. Check you network cable, router or modem network and power cables.
  2. Check router or modem connection status (power and internet indicators)
  3. Try a different network adapter (usb, wireless etc.)
If Internet status is ‘Connected’, then try flushing the DNS (Domain Name System).
Follow the steps to flush DNS.
  1. Click Start and go to Run and type cmd and hit enter to open the command prompt or Go to Start then to All programs select Accessories and Command prompt
  2. Type ipconfig /flushdns: and hit enter
  3. After flushing check if problem persists. If it does, check the modem/router connection status indicators.
If status is ‘Limited or no connectivity’, then unplug the network cable; turn off the router/modem. Go to start and select Run or Hit Win+R, type ‘cmd’ and hit enter or Start then select All programs then Accessories and then Command prompt and type the following commands.
  1. Type ipconfig /release in the command window and hit enter
  2. Type ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter
  3. Type netsh winsock reset hit enter
  4. Type netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt and hit enter
  5. Type netsh int reset all and hit enter
  6. Type netsh routing reset all and hit enter
  7. Type netsh routing dump and hit enter
  8. Plug in network cable and turn on router/modem
  9. Wait for few minutes
  10. Type ipconfig /renew and hit enter.
Upon completion the above process check connection status again. It should say Connected.
If the problem still persists, try turning off your router or modem and your computer, wait for 20 minutes and then turn everything back on.
If you are connected on the network, but still you are unable to access the Internet, then you need to check whether the firewall protection is active or not. It is recommended in XP by Microsoft that you should never have two firewalls active at the same time. Try disabling one of the firewall and check whether you can connect to the Internet or not.
Try undoing the changes that you have recently made on your computer. If you have installed new OS, then you must download the corresponding network driver.
Check the network adapter card whether it’s functioning or it. Most of the time its due to the faulty network card which causes the connection failure. Try downloading the updated version of the driver. After following the above-mentioned instructions the local connection problem will be resolved.

Keyboard Troubleshooting

If you begin to experience problems with your keyboard not working or some of the keys not responding, the first thing you should try is to Press CTRL+ALT+DEL (all at the same time).
Depending on what version of Windows you have, you should get the Task List. In Windows 7 you may be given a list with the last option being Start Task Manager and that is the one you select.  A box will pop up that says Windows Task Manager.

In the image above, you will see a list of all tasks currently running including this tutorial being created called “Keyboard Troubleshooting”.
On the right hand side you will see in the title bar, the word “Status”. Under the Status column it indicates which programs are running as shown in the below image.
Not the case for the example above, but on your computer check for any programs that say “Not Responding” and select the first one with a “Not Responding” status. Next, click the End Task button on the bottom of the pop-up box as shown here:

Be sure to repeat the process until all tasks labeled “Not Responding” have ended. You will need to do this one at time.  Periodically check if the keyboard will work properly.
Check the keyboard is properly connected to the computer. If the keyboard has been disconnected, try rebooting the computer.
Recommendation
Your keyboard is one of the dirtiest parts of your computer.  Practice cleaning your computer on a regular basis.  This will help maintain your keyboard.  You can purchase a can of compressed air to blow air in the tiny spaces in between your keys to remove small particles of dust.
If you have tried a number of things and your keyboard is still not working, disconnect the current one and plug in a keyboard that you know is working if one is available.   This may determine if you need to get a new keyboard or if you have a central processing unit (CPU) problem.

Speed Up Your Computer by Limiting Startup Programs

Click the “Start” button and type “msconfig” in the text box on the Start menu. Press the “Enter” key to launch the “System Configuration” tool. You will see a number of tabs on this window. Both the “Startup” and the “Services” tabs are important to this process.
Click the “Startup” tab to view a list of programs that start up with Windows 7. Some programs may be obviously named, while others you may not recognize. As a rule of thumb, you should only disable programs you are certain about to prevent unexpected software failure. Placing a check in the box next to the program name causes the program to launch with Windows 7. Removing the check in the box prevents the program from launching.
Click the “Services” tag, then select the “Hide all Microsoft services” option in the bottom left corner. This ensures you don’t disable a service required by Windows. You will now see only the third-party services that launch when Windows 7 starts. Remove the check in the box next to any services you know that you don’t need. Click “OK” to make the changes, then reboot your Windows 7 computer when prompted.

Find the Amount of RAM

Just follow these simple steps.
  1. Click the Start button
  2. Choose Control Panel
  3. Double-click the System and Maintenance section
  4. Go to the System section and look for the Memory entry. This is the amount of RAM in your computer.

Disabling the Windows Recycle Bin

Convert FAT partiton to NTFS Partition

  • NTFS(NT File System) is the standard file sytem for Microsoft’s Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems.NTFS file system provides more stability, security and less fragmentation than previous FAT(File Allocation Table) file system used in operating systems like MS-DOS,Windows 98,Windows ME etc.
  • NTFS is the recommended file system for Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems because it’s is more powerful than FAT or FAT32 file systems used in former Windows OS’s, and includes features required for hosting Active Directory as well as other important security features.Windows Vista needed NTFS file system in order to install and we can’t install Windows Vista on a FAT partition.
  • Converting a partition from FAT or FAT32 to NTFS can be done by an inbuilt utility(convert.exe) in the Windows XP operating system. So if you want increased security and faster data encryption,go ahead and convert to NTFS.
  • To convert a FAT partition to NTFS, perform the following steps.
1.Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
2.In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs
3.After doing this the inbuilt utility, convert.exe will attempt to convert the drive for you.
For example, running the command convert E: /fs:ntfs would format drive E: to the NTFS format. You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command.
    Warning:
*This is a one-way conversion.Once you convert a drive or partition to NTFS, you cannot simply convert it back to FAT or FAT32. You will need to reformat the drive or partition which will erase all data, including programs and personal files, on the partition.
*Make sure there is minimum 3% free space on hard disk drive partitions for proper conversion.
    Note:
*Although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion from FAT to NTFS is minimal, it is best to perform a full backup of the data on the drive that it is to be converted prior to executing the convert command

Connect your Laptop with TV screen

Step 1: Most computers have an S-Video port that can be connected to the S-Video input of your TV screen using a very cheap S-Video cable (this cable is round with 4 or 7 pins). If you have an older monitor, you can use the 15-pin VGA cable to connect the computer to the TV and it will offer better picture quality than the S-Video cable.
    s video
    S-Video Cable
    vga cable
    VGA Cable
    DVI Cable
    DVI Cable
The newer HDTVs and laptop computers have DVI ports so a DVI Male to Male Cable or DVI to HDMI Adapter Cable can be used to hook the computer display and the TV. The DVI to HDMI cable can be used when your HDTV doesn’t have an DVI port but does have an HDMI port.

Connect the Audio RCA Cable for Sound

Step 2: Now that you have connected the computer to the TV using a physical cable, you need another cable to transmit the sound as all the above cables only transmit the video but not the audio part.
    rca_audio
    Mini to RCA Audio Cable
You need a 3.5mm Mini Plug to RCA Cable Stereo to connect the audio line out from a notebook to your TV. The red cable connector goes into the red socket of your TV, black connector into the black socket while the black connector goes into the 3.5mm headphone jack of your computer.
Step 3: Open the “display settings” on your Windows computer and activate the output to the TV screen. You can either mirror content of your computer on the TV or extend the display just like a dual monitor screen.
If you are using Windows 7, press the keyboard shortcut Windows + P to quickly access the display settings or search for “Connect to External Display” in the Windows Run box.
Step 4: Pick up your TV remote and switch to “External Inputs” from the menu. You will need to change the default “Video 1″ to a different selection which may be “HDMI 1″ or “Video 2″ depending on how you have made the connection.
Important: Make sure that you connect the physical cable to the TV before turning on the computer as sometimes it may fail to recognize external display. You may also need to change the screen resolution of your TV using the Display settings in your Control Panel else the picture may sometimes appear distorted

Incease Laptop charge Backup as Longtime

Turn off Wi-Fi and BlueTooth - Most laptops have shortcut keys to instantly disable wireless networking.

    2. Don't play computer games, music or DVD movies - Multimedia activities drain laptop batteries.

    3. Disconnect all external device like PC Card modems, Firewire, USB devices and optical drives. Use the notebook touchpad instead of an external mouse.

    4. Adjust your screen brightness - Dimming your display saves battery power.

    5. Tweak Windows Power Options - Choose a Laptop power scheme that turns off the notebook monitor and hard disk after 10 minutes of inactivity.

    6. Decrease or mute the Laptop Speaker Volume.

    7. Turn off all scheduled tasks.

    8. Turn off Auto-save features in Microsoft Office and other applications.

    9. If your PC has a built-in wireless card, turn it off or disable it when not in use.

    10. Programs that are run from a CD or DVD can be copied to and run from the hard drive, which typically consumes less power than an optical drive.

Looking for the longest battery life laptop ? Actually, many factors affect the amount of time that a laptop battery can deliver power before it must be recharged.

How to extend laptop battery life? Here are some more tips to improve your notebook's battery life:

    1. If you do not use your laptop for extended periods of time (a week or more), remove the battery pack from the laptop.

    2. Do not expose the battery to high heat or freezing temperatures. Do not leave your battery in your car in the summer. Hot batteries discharge very quickly, and cold ones can't create as much power.

    3. Make sure to plug your laptop charger adapter into a UPS and not directly into a power outlet or surge protector.

    4. If you have a nickel-metal hydride battery, completely drain and recharge the battery once a month to maximize its capacity to hold a charge.

    5. Fully charge new battery packs before use. New pack needs to be fully charged and discharged (cycled) a few times before it can condition to full capacity.

    6. For laptops that work as Desktop Replacement, the battery should be re-installed every 3-4 weeks and allowed to fully discharge.

    7. Leaving a battery in a laptop while using an electrical outlet for long periods of time will keep the battery in a constant state of charging up and that will reduce the life cycle of the battery.

Battery-saving sleep modes: Should I use Stand By or Hibernate

    Standby mode
Use standby to save power when you will be away from the computer for a short time while working - your monitor and hard disks turn off, all applications and open files are stored in RAM. When you want to use the computer again, it comes out of standby quickly, and your desktop is restored exactly as you left it.

    Hibernation Mode
Use hibernation to save power when you will be away from the computer for an extended time while working - your computer shuts down to save power but first saves everything in memory on your hard disk. When you restart the computer, your desktop is restored exactly as you left it.

When you choose Start, Turn Off Computer in Windows XP, your options are Stand By, Turn Off, and Restart. To Hibernate, place the cursor over Stand By, then hold down Shift and click.

Best Tips To Increase Windows Laptop Battery Backup Time

When we buy a laptop, then we do focus on some of the parameters like RAM, Hard Drive capacity, Graphics card, Cache Memory and few other features. One of the most important features about the laptop, which we usually forget to consider, is the battery backup. For the first year of usage you will notice that the battery backup is adequate as compared to the other laptops around you (or as promised to you by the seller), but then it starts degrading suddenly and then the only option with which you are left is to change the battery.

6-Cell Li-ion Battery is the most common battery used in most of the laptops. There are certain tips with the help of which you can take care of the battery life and make it durable, please do take care of all the tips mentioned below:-
    1. Never ever put your laptop on your bed while using it, this is one of the major problems for the decrement in the life of laptop battery. When you put your laptop battery on your bed mattress then it blocks the heating vents of your laptops and all the area of that mattress starts heating up along with the laptop making it a hotter base for you laptop. Thus for the cooling of your laptop, motherboard increases the speed of the cooling fan of your laptop which in return starts eating up your battery backup.
    2. Try to put your battery away from high temperature. Your laptop battery loses its durability if it is kept consistently under high temperature. If you have got 2 batteries for your laptop then always keep the other battery wrapped up in a plastic under a cold environment and make sure that the other battery has been discharged up to 50 percent.
    3. Never ever let the battery backup go below 15 percent. You must have heard people saying that once must fully discharge the battery and then charge it again to increase its life, but that is not completely true. This tip will work only when you have not discharged the battery below 15 percent; if it goes below 15 percent it will put high stress on the battery which may permanently hamper it.
    4. Never unplug your laptop battery in between a charging cycle. This simply means that never unplug the battery while it is getting charged and not reached its 100 percent (or I should say unless one cycle is complete).
    5. Do not remove the battery while using your laptop. I have seen people with the habit of removing the battery from their laptop when it gets plugged in to the external supply. If there is an electricity supply cutoff then all the data will be lost and believe me there will be high chance that your hard disk may crash (depends on how older your laptop is?). Now if your laptop has a problem of overheating (which happens due to the accumulation of dust into the heat vents blocking heat flow from your laptop to outside), then it advisable to remove the battery if laptop body temperature goes above 60 degree Celsius.
    6. Never overcharge your battery. Please do not let your laptop be plugged in even when you battery has been fully charged. Doing so will decrease the charge capacity of your battery or I should say it will reduce the backup time of your laptop. Once your laptop gets fully charged remove the power chord from the laptop and use the laptop on the battery back until it reaches it’s 15 percent capacity, then plug that power chord again and do not unplug it until it is fully charged.
    7. Things to remember to increase the backup-time while using your laptop on battery. If you using your laptop on backup and an immediate power supply is not nearby then try to keep the brightness at low as possible, this will really help a lot as brightness is main source of drawing the battery out. Apart from this, try to switch off the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (which are nowadays switched on from the same switch on your laptop) and all the unnecessary processes which are still running on your system. Let me explain this with an example of a situation, if you are using internet through a Wifi router and you are writing certain application and suddenly electricity cuts-off, then you can do the following; Lower the brightness, turn off your Bluetooth and Wifi, deactivate all the firewalls and anti-virus installed on your system (as now you are not connected to internet), Mute the speaker and try your best not to play any media file.
Do all this and then see the difference, I can guarantee you that your battery backup will be increased by 50%.
From time to time keep on defragmenting your hard-disk, it will arrange data efficiently thus reducing the power used by hard drive, if you have any other hard drive connected through USB then please remove it and then empty the CD\DVD ROM.
    8. Power Options, select these options as per your requirements, if you don’t have much idea about it then select the default package for maximum batter as specified in the screenshot above. It will be wiser to put the laptop into hibernate mode rather than sleep mode, as in the hibernate mode OS will pause all the operations and will completely shut down the system whereas in the sleep mode, only hard disk will be turned off and touchpad with other peripherals will be active to get any command and then wakeup the system from its sleep mode.
I hope these tips will help you to do the needful as mentioned above. Please share any other tip which has not been mentioned above.
