Backup Steps

1)Connect your external hard drive to the Mac's USB port

2)Put the installation disc into the computer's DVD drive and restart. Before the operating system loads, hold the "C" key to enter setup mode

3) Choose the "Disk Utility" option.

 

4) Highlight the drive you want to back up in the "Source" panel on the left side of the screen

 

5) Click the "Verify Disk" button under the First Aid tab. If no problems arise, click the "New Image" button to initiate a new backup file

6) Name the backup and set the backup location to the external drive. Click the "Save" button to start the backup and input your username and administrator password.

7)  Wait for the backup to finish

 

Formatting Steps

8) Restart your computer.

 

9) Hold "C" to open the setup menu and choose "Disk Utility."

 

10) Click on the hard drive you want to erase and select the "Erase" tab from the work pane on the right

 

11)Click the "Format" button and select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" from the drop-down list.

12) Click the "Security Options" button Choose "Zero Out Data." This writes zeroes over all data on the drive, ensuring a complete erasure

 

13) Click "OK" and then click "Erase" to start the format.
