Read old News papers and books

1.Google News – Google News indexes thousands of newspaper websites from around the world and organizes news in clusters for easy reading. In addition to current news, Google News also offers access to stories published in old newspapers that you can search for free.
Although many of these newspaper issues are scanned images of the original printed version, you can use Google search to find stories inside the papers through the magic of OCR.   The actual content is hosted on other sites and Google will show if it cost any money to read that issue /news story.
2. Google Books – If you’re looking for an older issue of a magazine, Google Books might be the best place to find it.
These magazines are scanned and searchable and can be read online using the standard Google Book interface.   Decades worth of material are available, and the magazines are laid out just as they were when they were originally printed.   You can read archived magazines cover to cover, including the original articles, index, cover, and advertisements.
3. Trove – The National Library of Australia has a large selection of newspapers from across Australia archived online that anyone may read for free.   All the newspapers are completely scanned and can be viewed online in any modern browser, or you may download them as a PDF for offline reading.
4. Library of Congress – The Library of Congress has a large repository of historic newspapers published in America between 1880 and 1922, available as PDFs.
Though the library has made available newspapers from 14 states and Washington, DC., these states contain some of the largest newspapers and thus the archives are still a very valuable resource.   Additionally, the site has a database of records of all newspapers printed in America from 1690 to the present, including newspapers that are currently not published.
5. Newseum – Here you can find and download front pages of 800+ newspapers from around the world and the newspaper gallery is updated every day. The collection includes small-town and local newspapers as well as globally-distributed big papers.   They also maintain an archive of newspaper front pages belonging to dates of significant importance (for example, see the September 11 archive).
6. The Olden Times – If you’re looking for a popular article about a major historical event, the Olden Times may be a good place to look for it.   Although they do not contain entire newspapers, they do have snippets including popular news articles, print advertisements, and personal information sections such as births and obituaries.   All content is free, and the content ranges from between 1788 and 1920.
7. OMA – Like The Olden Times but for past magazine issues. Old Magazine Articles contains magazine pages covering from famous historical events. The articles can be downloaded as PDF files for free though they have been mildly edited to remove advertisements from the original magazines.
8. Wayback Machine – Simply enter a news website address into the search box (nytimes.com for example), and the Wayback machine will show you a list of snapshots of that site. You can then read the news as it appeared on that day. It also includes collections of news articles from major events like the Asian Tsunami of 2004.
9. NewspaperARCHIVE – This is the world’s largest online archive of historical newspapers published from 1753 onwards.   You can browse newspaper issues by date or find articles that match a particular phrase. NewspaperARCHIVE costs $9.99 a month if you subscribe for an year.
10. Ancestry.com – Although Ancestry.com is designed for building family trees or for finding information about your ancestors, its archives also includes thousands of newspapers and periodicals dating back to the 1700′s. Subscriptions start at $19.95/month or $12.95/month if paid per year.

Archives of Popular Newspapers and News agencies

2. Times Archive – The Times. the daily paper from the UK, offers digital archives of issues from 1785 to 1985 on their website.   All pages of the papers are completely scanned, and are additionally organized with an index of topics.   You can read the articles highlighted on their front page for free while specific papers and articles are available for £4.95/day.
3. British Library – The British Library has scanned and digitized millions of pages of historic newspapers printed in the UK and Ireland during the 1700s and 1800s and have put them all online. Anyone can search through these newspaper archives but you’ll have to pay a £6.95 fee for 48 hour access to the online library. The newspapers can be downloaded in PDF format.
4. BBC – The On This Day section of BBC offers an online archive of some of the most significant stories broadcast by BBC News since 1950.     You can select any date from the menu at the top of the page, and view the news from that date as well as today’s historical news.
5. Press Display – This is like online newspaper kiosk where you can find current and past issues of hundreds of newspapers and magazines in full-color, full-page format. Individual issues cost 99 ¢ each and you may also download them on your Windows PC, Mac or mobile devices for offline reading.
6. Boston Globe – All issues of The Boston Globe newspaper printed since 1924 are available online. You can access all news articles printed since 1979 for free while the older articles are available at $2.95 for a single article

Extract Image Frames from a Video File

Let’s say you have a video file that may be a scene from a DVD movie, a clip that you downloaded from YouTube, or something that you captured with your webcam. Here are some ways by which you can extract (still) image frames from the video file.
Option 1. If you want to save only a few frames from the video, you may do that manually using your existing media player itself – see detailed instructions on how to capture images from videos.
Option 2. If you wish to capture a sequence of images from the video, you may either use GOM Media Player or if your video file in the AVI format, use AV Cutty which will export the entire video in a series of image frames.
Option 3. Then there’s the popular VLC Media Player which is available on Windows, Mac and Linux and let you extract images through the command line. The good part about VLC is that it supports all the popular Video formats without you have to install codecs separately.
Here’s the command for extracting images using VLC:
C:\VideoLAN\VLC>vlc "C:\videos\hello.mov" --video-filter=scene
   --vout=dummy --start-time=1 --stop-time=5 --scene-ratio=1
   --scene-prefix=img- --scene-path=C:\images\ vlc://quit
How VLC command works?
hello.mov is the full path of the video file while C:\images is the directory where we want to save the video thumbnails. The scene prefix is img meaning are thumbnails will be numbered as img1.jpg, img2.jpg and so on. The start and stop time specifies the time in seconds while the scene-ratio means that we want to output one image per frame.
Option 4. Finally, here’s something I prefer though it again involves the command line. Download the Win32 binary of ffmpeg here, extract the file and then use the following command to make image thumbnails of any video file.
c:\ffmpeg.exe -i c:\video\hello.mov – ss 10 – t 4
              -f image2 – sameq -vcodec mjpeg img-%03d.jpg

Your Gmail ID Creation Date

If your Google account ever gets hacked or if you are unable to get into your Gmail account because you no longer have access to your mobile phone number or alternate email address, Google will require you to answer a few security questions before restoring your account.
These questions include:
  1. What was the last password you used to sign-in to your Google Account?
  2. When was the last time you were able to sign in to your Google Account?
  3. When did you create your Google Account?
All these questions are required and if you are not sure about the exact dates, Google says that you can provide your “best estimate.”
It is therefore recommended that you make a note of Google account creation date at a safe place but where you do get this information from? One option is that you open your Gmail mailbox, switch to All messages and note the timestamp of the welcome message from Gmail.
When did you create your Gmail account?

When did I create the Google Account?

In case you have deleted that email message, here is how you can easily find out the date when you created you Google / Gmail account.
  1. Go to google.com/takeout and sign-in with your current Google Account.
  2. Now click the link that says “Transfer your Google+ connections to another account”
  3. Google will once again require your account password. Sign-in and on the next screen you’ll see you Google Account creation as shown in the above screenshot.

Install Windows 8 as a Virtual Machine

Use Windows 8 in a Virtual Environment

Here’s a step-by-step guide that explains how you can install Windows 8 as a virtual machine. Don’t let these steps intimidate you as installing Windows 8 inside a VM is an extremely easy process and should not take more than 20-30 minutes to complete.
Step 1: Download the ISO image of Windows 8 or create a bootable Windows 8 DVD as illustrated in the previous tutorials.
Step 2: Download and install the Virtual Box program for Windows available at oracle.com. If you have been using an older version of Virtual Box, please upgrade to the latest version of VM VirtualBox as it includes support for Windows 8.
Step 3: Launch the Oracle VM Virtual Box program from the Windows Programs Menu and click the “New” button (or press Ctrl+N) to create a new Windows 8 Virtual Machine. Click the “Hide Description” button to get started.
Windows 8 Virtual Machine
Step 4: Give your virtual machine a name (like Windows 8). Set the Operating System as Windows and pick Windows 8 for the Version.  Next you need to allocate RAM to your new Windows 8 VM. The minimum that you should allocate is 1024 MB (or 1 GB) though you can always move that slider further right to 2 GB for improved performance. Click Create.
Step 5: Next choose the file location where you would like to save the Windows 8 virtual hard disk. If you just want to try Windows 8 and don’t plan to install any additional apps, the recommended size is 25 GB.
Set the file type for the disk as VDI or VirtualBox Disk Image. Also, the virtual hard disk should be allotted a “fixed size” because that is likely to offer the best performance.
Windows 8 Virtual Disk
Step 6: You are all set to create new hard disk for Windows 8.
It is time to grab a cup of coffee as VirtualBox will create a large physical file now (for storing the Windows 8 OS) and it might take anywhere between 3-4 minutes to finish the process.
Windows 8 - Setting up Virtual Drive
Step 6: Your Windows 8 virtual hard disk is now ready but before you can use it, you need to make a few modifications. While you are inside the VirtualBox Manager windows, select the Windows 8 VM and press Ctrl + S to open the settings window.
  • Go to System –> Motherboard and Enable IO APIC. (should be enabled by default)
  • Go to System –> Processor and Enable PAE/NX. (should be enabled by default)
  • Go to Display –> Video and Enable 2D Video Acceleration. (disabled by default)
Windows 8 VM Settings
Step 16: Click OK to save all the settings and double-click the Virtual Machine labeled Windows 8 to launch the program. You can either insert the Windows 8 installer DVD or click the folder icon and browse to the folder where the Windows 8 ISO file is stored.
Click the Next button and this will initiate the actual Windows 8 setup routine. You can the Windows 8 serial number and it should take about 20-30 minutes to complete the installation process.
Install Windows 8
Here’s a quick video screencast that captures the actual installation of Windows 8 inside a Virtual Machine.
Trivia: Do you know that you can use Virtual Machines, like the one created above, to run another instance of Windows 8 inside an existing Windows 8 machine.

Install Windows 8 on your Mac

Install Windows 8 on your Mac using Boot Camp

Step 1: Create a bootable Windows 8 DVD using the ISO images of Windows 8. These ISO images are available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions – I tested using the 32-bit version on iMac  and it worked fine.
Step 2: Launch the Boot Camp Assistant available under the Applications – > Utilities folder of your Mac.
Install Windows 8 on Mac with Bootcamp
Step 3: Under Tasks, select Install Windows 7 and hit Continue. If you already have Windows running on your Mac through Boot Camp, this option will read “Remove Windows 7.” This will remove the existing Windows partition from your Mac and thus all the programs and files on that Windows partitions will also be lost.
Bootcamp Assistant for Installing Windows
Step 4: Assuming that you would like to continue, the next screen will let you create a new partition for your Windows 8. Drag the slider to allocate anywhere between 20 GB – 30 GB space to this new partition.
Create Windows 8 Partition on Mac
Step 5: Insert the Windows 8 DVD into your Mac and hit the Install button available inside the Boot Camp Assistant wizard.
Step 6: This will initiate the regular Windows 8 installation routine on your Mac. The Windows installer will require you to pick an available partition where installation should be performed. Pick the disk partition that says “BOOTCAMP”
Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS.
The workaround is easy. While the Boot Camp partition is selected, choose advanced Drive options and hit the F key to format that partition to NTFS. That’s it. Just follow the prompts, use DNJXJ-7XBW8-2378T-X22TX-BKG7J for the serial number and you should have Windows 8 on your Mac in the next 20-30 minutes.

Switch between Windows 8 and Mac OS X

If you are inside Windows 8 and restart the system, it will automatically boot into Windows. However you can press and hold the Option key while the system is booting and it will give you a choice of operating systems that you want to boot into.
If you would like to change the default start-up volume of your Mac, hit Command-Q and search for Start-up Disk. Or open System Preferences and choose Startup Disk from the View menu and set the default OS to either Mac or Windows 8.

Build a Wireless Network without a Router

Setup Wireless Network without a Wireless Router

Now consider a slightly different scenario – you have all these Wi-Fi enabled devices at home but there’s no router. Well, there’s no reason to buy one because you can still easily setup a wireless network as long as your computers have a wireless network adapter*.
wireless network adapters
[*] Most new desktops and laptop computers are already equipped with internal network adapters so you are ready to go without a router. If your computer doesn’t have built-in wireless capabilities, you can either buy a USB network adapter that plugs into the USB port of your desktop or go for a wireless adapter that directly plugs into your notebook’s PC Card slot. Desktop users can also opt for an internal wireless PCI card but you’ll have to open the computer case in order to install this network adapter.

Create a Wi-Fi Network without a Router

Now that you have everything in place to create a Wi-Fi network, let’s actually build one.
For Windows XP and Vista users
If your main computer, that is already connected to the internet, is running Windows XP, Vista or even Mac OS X, you can set up an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network and the other wireless devices can then connect to the web via this ad-hoc network (also called a computer-to-computer network).
Wired Connection In, Wireless Connection Out
It’s an easy process. To set up an ad-hoc network in Windows Vista, go to Network and Sharing Center from the control panel, select “Set up a connection or network” and choose “Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network”.
Make sure you select “Save this network” option else the ad hoc network will be removed if no other computers / devices are connecting to the network.
create wireless ad hoc network
save ad-hoc network
Turn on Internet Sharing in the next screen and now your other home computers can connect to the ad hoc network just like they would connect to any regular wireless network. Setting up an ad hoc network in XP takes a couple of extra steps but also make sure the host computer is running at least XP SP2 or SP3.
For Windows 7 users
If you are on Windows 7, you can instantly turn your  computer into a personal Wi-Fi hotspot without having to configure anything. All you need is a free software called Virtual Router and the computer connected to the internet must be running Windows 7.
[*] Virtual Router works will all editions of Windows 7 except the Starter edition because Microsoft has disabled the Virtual Wifi feature in that particular edition.virtual wifi router
Using the virtual router is simple – just run the program on any Windows 7 computer, assign a password and that’s it. In the above example, I used the Virtual Router to connect an iPod, an Ubuntu Linux laptop and a Windows desktop to the Internet via a Windows 7 notebook where that virtual router software was running.
As new devices join the Wireless network, their assigned IP and MAC addresses instantly appear in the Virtual Router window. And you can click the “Stop Router” button anytime to deactivate the hotspot and disable Internet sharing.

Virtual Wi-Fi vs Ad Hoc Wireless Networking

To set up Ad Hoc networking, your main computer needs to have an Ethernet based Internet connection as well as a Wireless (WLAN) network adapter. In the case of Virtual Wi-Fi, the Ethernet card is optional so you can turn a laptop into a hotspot even if your laptop itself is connected to a Wireless network and not to an Ethernet cable.
Computers and other wireless devices in ad hoc networks must be within 30 feet of each other but there’s no such restriction in the case of Virtual Wireless networks.
Ad-Hoc wireless networking is available on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 while Virtual WiFi, which is much easier to setup, is available on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008.

How to Download Currently playing Game Video

Jesse is looking for a game recorder software to help him capture movies of PC games (with sound) that he can upload to YouTube Videos. The software should also save still screenshots of gaming scenes.
While you can record online Flash games or DOS games using any screencasting software, the situation gets a bit tricky when playing computer games that use DirectX 3D or OpenGL because they render only a blank footage with regular screen capture programs.

Fortunately, here are some good in-game video recording software that will record motion video in the background while you are playing your favorite PC game. Most of them support still image captures as well:
record game movies 1. WeGame.com -  Though this is a place for uploading screencasts of video games but they also provide a free Windows software for recording games on the computer. Just start the software, launch your game and hit record.
Wegame is absolutely free and supports Halo, World of Warcraft, Ages of Empire, Half Life, Grand Theft Auto, Wolfenstein, America’s Army and most other popular games.
fraps-video-capture 2. FRAPS – This is probably the best option for recording movies of video game but costs a few bucks. FRAPS saves the video game into AVI format so the recording is smooth as the movie is not getting compressed at the time of recording. You can reduce the video size with VirtualDub or Windows Media Encoder before uploading to YouTube.
FRAPS can record still screenshots or full game movies. Just press F9 to start or pause the recording. . The free version will however add a watermark to your game movies.
capture-game-screenshots 3. Taksi – Taksi is game recording software similar to FRAPS but it is open source and free. Taksi can capture game screenshots or video clips of running games but without audio.
Taksi also lets you capture gaming sessions in full screen mode with hotkeys.
4. Game Cam – This is another free software for making movies of your favorite games on Windows. It will automatically search for games installed on your computer and will create an individual recording profile of every game. Game Cam can capture game screen shots, videos in AVI as well as audio.
Tips for Recording Computer Games
Recording games will slow down your computer so try to record at a lower frame rate and stop all non-essential processes like spyware, anti-virus and other running software.  Also consider lowering the desktop screen resolution for smooth recordings of game videos.
YouTube will resize videos to 320×240 so maintain the same 4:3 aspect ratio of the game screen before hitting the record button.
Finally, if you have to capture only a small duration video clip or just a quick game screenshot, SnagIT will do the trick since it supports DirectX input. You may have to turn off hardware acceleration during the recording process.

Access your Files on your Computer from Anywhere

Access Files on your Computer over the Internet

There are couple of ways by which you can retrieve files stored on your home computer from anywhere else using a regular Internet connection.
Option 1: Using Online Backup
You can use an online backup service like SugarSync, Carbonite, SkyDrive or even Dropbox – they provide desktop utilities that will automatically upload files on your home computer to the Internet and you can then access these files through the web browser of any other Internet connected computer.
The upside is that your files will always be available to you even if the home computer is not running. SugarSync and Carbonite have a mobile optimized website so you can access files from any mobile phone as well.
The downside is that if you are using any of these services for the first time, you’ll to wait until they upload all your data to the cloud and this process may take long if you have too many files on the home computer.
Option 2: Using Desktop Sharing Software
There are free desktop sharing software like TeamViewer and UltraVNC that also let you remotely access your computer files from anywhere else. LogMeIn Pro is another good option for transferring files from a remote computer but these are paid services.
If all your computers are running Windows, you can use the built-in remote desktop connection feature of Windows (available in XP and later) to access your home computer from another Window computer over the Internet.
With Desktop Sharing software, you’ll always have access to all your files but one big limitation is that it requires that the remote computer stays on. Also, none of these options will help you access files on a mobile phone except LogMeIn which has an iPhone app.
Option 3: Access Files Directly through the Browser
Online backup services, discussed above, will copy files to their own servers before you can access them for anywhere else. Screen sharing services are often slow and they won’t work on most mobile devices. Let’s now explore another set of services that allow you download files directly from the home computer.
Copernic, like Google Desktop, is a popular desktop search software that you may use to find emails, documents and other files on your Windows computer. They have a paid component called myCopernic on the Go that lets you remotely search for content stored on the home or office computer. You can preview the search results and then download them to your mobile phone or remote PC.
With Opera Unite, you can easily turn your computer into a web server and instantly access files and folders on that computer from any other web browser (including that of mobile phones). Opera Unite is a standard web server and therefore you’ll be downloading files directly from the computer – they’re not uploaded anywhere else.
Another option is GBridge that lets you setup a virtual private network using your existing Google Account. Companies use VPNs to let employees access corporate data over a public network (Internet) and with GBridge, even home users can build their own VPNs to access remote files more securely.
Windows Live Sync at sync.live.com is another great choice for remotely accessing files over the Internet. Just install the Live Sync client on your computer and you can then access the entire hard drive of that computer simply through the Windows Live Sync website.
Finally, you may also want to check out HomePipe – this is an extremely easy and free service that lets you access your home files and media from any other computer or mobile phone. Install the HomePipe Agent and all files on that computer will instantly become available through the web. They also have apps for iPhone and Android phones.

Use Windows 7 theme in Windows xp

Use Windows 7 Themes with XP and Vista

windows 7 theme

First, launch the official Windows 7 themes directory and download some of the themes you like to your Windows XP or Vista desktop.
These files have a unique .themepack extension which is just another zip format containing all of the elements of a theme including the background images, Aero glass colors, sounds, cursors, icons, screen savers, etc.
To use these files on an older version of Windows, you first need to extract them as only Windows 7 can natively understand the themepack format. You can either change the file extension of the Windows 7 theme file from .themepack to .cab and then extract the files with a right-click, or install the free 7-Zip utility as 7-Zip can automatically hand the themepack file format.
windows 7 themepack file Extract themepack with 7-Zip Rename to CAB and extract in Explorer
Once extracted, your theme files will now be in a new folder that has the same name as your original themepack.

Aero Glass Border and Desktop Backgrounds

Now that you have all the required files, its time to activate the Windows 7 theme on your non-Windows 7 computer.
If your computer is running Windows Vista that supports Aero, simply double-click the .theme file that is present in the them folder you just extracted.   This will set your windows border glass to the color of the Windows 7 theme and your wallpaper to the default background of the theme. However, this background picture will disappear when you reboot your computer, so you need to set that as a permanent background.
Set Windows 7 theme in Vista Vista - change background permanently
Windows XP does not support Aero glass, but you can still use the background images from downloaded Windows 7 theme on your XP desktop. You can find the backgrounds inside the themepack folder itself or in a sub-folder named DesktopBackground. Pick any image, right click on it, and select “Set as Desktop Background.”

Windows 7 like Desktop Slideshows for XP and Vista

Most Windows 7 themes consist of multiple background images and Windows 7 will automatically change your desktop background at periodic intervals using one of the images from the themepack. Windows Vista and XP do not support desktop slideshows, but you can easily bring that feature use the excellent and free John’s Background Switcher program.
To create a desktop slideshow, click the add button and choose “A folder on your computer.” Now select the Windows 7 theme folder that contains all the background images. The program allows lot of tweaking but you can skip that because the default settings are very similar to what you need for simulating Windows 7 behavior on your XP or Vista computer.
Add folder containing Windows 7 wallpapers Choose your Windows 7 Theme Folder
However, John’s Background Switcher by default shows the name of the image in the top right hand corner of the picture.   To remove this, click the “More…” button that has a gear icon on it. Uncheck the box beside the 3rd entry which says “Show picture info on the top-right corner of the screen.” Now click Ok, and then click Ok in the main window, and your desktop slideshow is all ready.
For RSS-enabled Windows 7 Themes
Some Windows 7 themes download images from the internet (via RSS feeds) when switching desktop backgrounds.
To know if the theme you are looking to port on your Vista or XP computer uses RSS or not, open the .theme file in a text editor like Notepad. Then search for the string “RssFeed” without the quotes. If you find that string, copy the link address of the RSS feed and, you can then use the “RSS photo feed” option in John’s Background Switcher program to create an RSS powered desktop slideshow on your XP or Vista machines.
Desktop Slideshow with RSS Add the RSS Feed from Windows 7 Theme

Windows 7 Sounds, Cursor, Screensavers, etc.

Most Windows 7 themes only contain a glass color and desktop backgrounds.   However, some may contain screensavers, sounds, cursors, and icons as well. The good part is that you can use the elements on your Vista / XP theme as well.
Sounds - You can copy the sound files (.wav) to the default media folder (C:\Windows\Media), and if you have set the Windows 7 theme in Windows Vista as described above, it will automatically these sounds. Else, you will have to manually change your sounds from the Control Panel.
Icons - If the Windows 7 theme that you plan to use with XP or Vista contains a different set of desktop and system icons (.ico files), you may follow the directions below to apply them on your version of Windows:
A. For Windows Vista – Right-click on the desktop, select Personalize and choose “Change Desktop Icons.” Select the items you which to change, click “Change Icons,” and browse to the location of new icons that are part of the Windows 7 theme.
B. For Windows XP – Right-click on the desktop, select Properties and choose “Customize Desktop” under the Desktop tab. Select the items you wish to change, click “Change Icon,” and browse to the location of the icons from your theme.
A: Change desktop icons in Vista B: Change desktop icons in Vista A: Change Desktop Icons in Windows XP B: Change Desktop Icons in Windows XP
To change icons of individual programs, simply right-click on the program shortcut on your desktop, select Properties, and click the button that says “Change Icon” in the Shortcut tab. Browse to the location of the icon extract from the Windows 7 theme and select the one you want to apply.
Screensavers – For using a Windows 7 screensaver inside XP or Vista, just copy the relevant screensaver files (.scr) into your Windows system folder usually located at C:\Windows\System32.   Now, change your system screensaver using the usual method. Please remember that not all Windows 7 screensavers will work correctly on previous versions of Windows.
Cursors – You can copy the Windows 7 cursor files (.cur or .ani) to C:\Windows\Cursors on XP or Vista, and then apply the new set using the mouse settings under Control Panel. Use the [Control Panel\Cursors] of the .theme file (see example) to understand the default cursor mappings.

Translate PDF and Word Documents to another languages

The easiest option is that you upload the document to the Google Translation website – translate.google.com – then select the language translation pair and hit the Translate button.
The other good option is the Translator Toolkit, also from Google, where you may not only translate documents but also edit the translated material. Microsoft also offers a free utility that brings translation capabilities right into all your existing Office programs (including Outlook emails).

Connect your Laptop with TV screen

Step 1: Most computers have an S-Video port that can be connected to the S-Video input of your TV screen using a very cheap S-Video cable (this cable is round with 4 or 7 pins). If you have an older monitor, you can use the 15-pin VGA cable to connect the computer to the TV and it will offer better picture quality than the S-Video cable.

The newer HDTVs and laptop computers have DVI ports so a DVI Male to Male Cable or DVI to HDMI Adapter Cable can be used to hook the computer display and the TV. The DVI to HDMI cable can be used when your HDTV doesn’t have an DVI port but does have an HDMI port.

Connect the Audio RCA Cable for Sound

Step 2: Now that you have connected the computer to the TV using a physical cable, you need another cable to transmit the sound as all the above cables only transmit the video but not the audio part.
rca_audio
Mini to RCA Audio Cable
You need a 3.5mm Mini Plug to RCA Cable Stereo to connect the audio line out from a notebook to your TV. The red cable connector goes into the red socket of your TV, black connector into the black socket while the black connector goes into the 3.5mm headphone jack of your computer.
Step 3: Open the “display settings” on your Windows computer and activate the output to the TV screen. You can either mirror content of your computer on the TV or extend the display just like a dual monitor screen.
If you are using Windows 7, press the keyboard shortcut Windows + P to quickly access the display settings or search for “Connect to External Display” in the Windows Run box.
Step 4: Pick up your TV remote and switch to “External Inputs” from the menu. You will need to change the default “Video 1″ to a different selection which may be “HDMI 1″ or “Video 2″ depending on how you have made the connection.
Important: Make sure that you connect the physical cable to the TV before turning on the computer as sometimes it may fail to recognize external display. You may also need to change the screen resolution of your TV using the Display settings in your Control Panel else the picture may sometimes appear distorted

Incease Laptop charge Backup as Longtime

Turn off Wi-Fi and BlueTooth - Most laptops have shortcut keys to instantly disable wireless networking.

2. Don't play computer games, music or DVD movies - Multimedia activities drain laptop batteries.

3. Disconnect all external device like PC Card modems, Firewire, USB devices and optical drives. Use the notebook touchpad instead of an external mouse.

4. Adjust your screen brightness - Dimming your display saves battery power.

5. Tweak Windows Power Options - Choose a Laptop power scheme that turns off the notebook monitor and hard disk after 10 minutes of inactivity.

6. Decrease or mute the Laptop Speaker Volume.

7. Turn off all scheduled tasks.

8. Turn off Auto-save features in Microsoft Office and other applications.

9. If your PC has a built-in wireless card, turn it off or disable it when not in use.

10. Programs that are run from a CD or DVD can be copied to and run from the hard drive, which typically consumes less power than an optical drive.

Looking for the longest battery life laptop ? Actually, many factors affect the amount of time that a laptop battery can deliver power before it must be recharged.

How to extend laptop battery life? Here are some more tips to improve your notebook's battery life:

1. If you do not use your laptop for extended periods of time (a week or more), remove the battery pack from the laptop.

2. Do not expose the battery to high heat or freezing temperatures. Do not leave your battery in your car in the summer. Hot batteries discharge very quickly, and cold ones can't create as much power.

3. Make sure to plug your laptop charger adapter into a UPS and not directly into a power outlet or surge protector.

4. If you have a nickel-metal hydride battery, completely drain and recharge the battery once a month to maximize its capacity to hold a charge.

5. Fully charge new battery packs before use. New pack needs to be fully charged and discharged (cycled) a few times before it can condition to full capacity.

6. For laptops that work as Desktop Replacement, the battery should be re-installed every 3-4 weeks and allowed to fully discharge.

7. Leaving a battery in a laptop while using an electrical outlet for long periods of time will keep the battery in a constant state of charging up and that will reduce the life cycle of the battery.

Battery-saving sleep modes: Should I use Stand By or Hibernate

Standby mode
Use standby to save power when you will be away from the computer for a short time while working - your monitor and hard disks turn off, all applications and open files are stored in RAM. When you want to use the computer again, it comes out of standby quickly, and your desktop is restored exactly as you left it.

Hibernation Mode
Use hibernation to save power when you will be away from the computer for an extended time while working - your computer shuts down to save power but first saves everything in memory on your hard disk. When you restart the computer, your desktop is restored exactly as you left it.

When you choose Start, Turn Off Computer in Windows XP, your options are Stand By, Turn Off, and Restart. To Hibernate, place the cursor over Stand By, then hold down Shift and click.

How to find your motherboard model number

It is very  inconvenient when you try to reinstall Windows and start wondering how to find what is the model of your motherboard in order to download the necessary drivers from the Internet. This usually happens when you lose the user’s manual and CD with drivers for your motherboard. Therefore, in this post, I will give you some simple tips that might be useful to you.
You can find the model and version of the motherboard with programs like CPU-Z, Everest or PC Wizard. For example: to see information about the motherboard in CPU-Z just start the program and click the Motherboard tab.

If you can’t find any application that can do the job or you don’t have access to the Internet to download it, the next thing that you can do is to open the computer’s case and to look for the model near the PCI slots, AGP slot, PCI-express slot or between the processor and the RAM slot

Be sure to check the documentation that comes with your computer or you may lose your warranty. In case if you can’t open your computer you can see the model name at the computer startup. Use the key “Pause Break” on your keyboard (when you see the first BIOS POST screen) to stop loading the system and see what is the model. With newer motherboards that can be quite difficult because they pass through the Welcome screen very quickly, even before the monitor is started, so to try to press the key (immediately after the start) without waiting for displaying a picture and wait. If you fail the first time try again.

Change MAC address in Windows Xp

1. Go to Start > Control panel > Network and Internet connections , then right click on the that network connection whose network card’s MAC address  you want to change and click Properties.
2. In the General tab, click on the Configure button.
3. Then click on the Advanced tab.
4.In the Property section, you have to see an option saying Network Address or Locally Administered Address. Select it and change the radio button to Value ( Not present means that your network card will use the default MAC address programmed by the manufacturer ).
5. Now type in a new MAC address and click OK.
6. Restart the computer.
7. To make sure that the change is successful go to command prompt ( Start > Run, type in cmd and click OK )  then type in  ipconfig /all.
As you can see the above method is very convenient but not all network cards offer such an option. For example, Broadcom 440x 10/100 ( used in Dell Inspiron 1501 laptops ) does not allow to change its MAC address through the Properties window. In such cases the following method will solve the problem.
1. Go to Start > Run and type regedt32 in the box to start the registry editor.
2. Go to the following registry key:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and double click on it to expand the tree.
3. Now you can see the subkeys starting with 0000, then 0001, 0002, 0003, 0004 and so on. Each of them represents  particular network adapter.
4. Go through each subkey and look for DriverDesc keyword, that matches the network card you want to change the MAC address.
5. Look for a string value named “NetworkAddress”, right click on it and  select Modify. Then enter a new MAC address in its value data box.  If the value  “NetworkAddress” does not exist, then create one with right click on the subkey ( for example 0008 ), then select New > String Value, name the new value as NetworkAddress and repeat the above step.
6. You must restart your computer for the change to take effect.

How to install Win Xp from USB flash drive

Today I will try to write a short guide explaining how install Win XP from USB flash drive. It may be  useful if you need to reinstall the operating system of your netbook or if you own a laptop with a faulty optical drive and the only way to reinstall Windows is through USB , but before you start you will need a few things. The first is a small program, that I’m going to use for preparing the flash drive and copying the system files on it. It’s called WinSetupFromUSB and can be downloaded from here. You will also need original ISO file of Windows XP and of course USB Flash Drive with at least 1GB capacity for data storage.

OK! Let’s start.
1. Download and install WinSetupFromUSB.
2. Create a new folder with any name of your choice and extract the Windows XP ISO file into that folder. You can use programs like UltraISO.
3. Connect the USB Flash Drive to your PC and start WinSetupFromUSB. If drive is detected properly it should appear in the USB Disk Selection drop down menu. If you don’t see it there  this may be because it is not formatted yet.

Don’t worry, just press the RMPrepUSB button and select the options as shown in the picture below. Then click Prepare Drive.

Important! Using NTFS will significantly accelerate the installation process but may cause problems with certain models of flash drives. Therefore in such cases it is advisable to use FAT.
4.Answer OK to the following questions displayed by the program.
winsetup prepare drive 2

5. Now your device is ready and the only thing left is just to copy the Windows XP files to it. Click the browse button to specify the full path to the folder where you extracted the Windows XP ISO file.

6. Click GO to start the process. On the bottom of the screen you will see a progress bar showing the current status of the process. You can also monitor the number of copied files as well as the space they occupy on disc.

When the process is complete you can connect the flash drive to your notebook or netbook, enter the BIOS and set the computer to boot from USB. Installation will begin with the following window where you just press enter to continue.

At the next window you can see that the installation process is divided into two parts. Press Enter again to continue with the first part that runs in text mode. Proceed as usual with selecting the partition where you want to install and then wait until  windows files are copied on the hard drive.

After the first restart you will have to boot again from the USB drive, but in the second window you have to select the second part in order to continue with the GUI-mode of XP Setup. Actually, it may be selected automatically by the program and you can just press enter.

When installation is complete, your computer should be able to start Windows from its internal hard drive
